The stash had accumulated over the years, and consisted of many, many maps and broadsides that were too fragile or damaged to be sent to the flat file drawers with the rest of the collection.

Thanks to all sorts of progress with technology we have GPS in our phones or car and these devices can talk us through the miles to our destination. But way back when, people relied on printed maps to get them from point A to point B. Travel maps had to be comprehensive enough so that travelers had the information they needed, but also small and light enough to be convenient to carry. Travel maps might come with a pamphlet (like this one) explaining features along the way or be just a single sheet of paper. In either case, the folding and re-folding of a map can take a significant toll, causing tears and necessitating conservation intervention before a map can be sent back to its home in the stacks.

This map and pamphlet, Lloyd's Official Map of the State of Virginia was published in 1872, although the map itself was first published in 1861. We have two other copies of this map without the pamphlet, so in consultation with the curator of Virginiana, we decided to keep the map with the pamphlet and work on getting the map back into a condition where it could be easily folded.

A standard approach is to begin with overall humidification and flattening of a document so that the tears can be mended flat. The overall treatment did result in a lot of progress for this map, but there were still some stubborn creases that required additional humidification and flattening.
For local treatment, we use pieces of Gortex, layered with damp blotter to provide just enough humidification to soften paper in the area around the crease and then drying under weights so that everything dries flat.

Best practice is to start in the middle where the creases are often most stubborn and then work out toward the edges. Once the piece is flat, you can re-assess the tears and start lining up the roads, rivers and mountains that are out of kilter.

It can be tremendously satisfying to see something that was torn and wrinkled become smooth and legible. That said, we are now facing the task of re-folding the map to make it fit the format of the pamphlet that it was published with. It may seem counter-intuitive, but we do want the next reader who uses the
Hello! My name is Emilie Duncan,
and I am the new graduate book conservation intern in Eliza’s lab at UVa. I am
a third year fellow in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in ArtConservation, and as such, will be completing a yearlong internship here.
Designed as a practical, hands-on follow up to my first two years, the
internship will involve treatment of both special collections and circulating
library books and archival documents, participation in general preservation
activities such as exhibit prep and pest management, and generally getting my
feet wet with book conservation in the “real world.”

At the close of my third week here,
I already have lined up some exciting and fascinating projects. Three weeks
spent “lining up” projects? You might think I have not been using my time
wisely, but there is a lot that goes into a conservation treatment before the
actual treatment even begins.

The
first step is careful examination and consideration of the object at hand,
including its materials, construction methods, and current condition problems.
All of this information is necessary to plan out a treatment that will
effectively and safely stabilize its condition and make it accessible to
researchers. For example, in my first week, I was presented with a large box of
maps and broadsides that had been stashed away by a former stacks manager
because they were in need of some sort of treatment before being housed in the library stacks. One of the details
that I recorded during my examination was media type and print process. Knowing
what materials are present can help determine what treatment methods are
possible. The oil- and pigment-based lithographic printing ink used on the bulk
of the objects is not sensitive to water-based treatments, such as bathing.
However, the poor-quality iron gall ink inscription at the bottom of one of the
broadsides may include added ingredients that could wash away during aqueous
treatment, so thorough testing will need to be carried out in order to ensure
that the treatment does not alter the document in a negative way.

Another important factor to consider before
proposing a treatment is the historical and material context of the object.
This information can help to understand construction and condition aspects of
the object as it exists today, as well as aid in determining specific goals of
a treatment. A good example is another one of my upcoming projects, an early
copy of Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum
(an exhaustive natural history record published shortly after his death in
1626). I say “early copy” because the book is lacking the title page (and the
front board, and most of its spine… but that is less relevant at this point)
which contains the date of publication. It would be fairly easy to just look up
the publication date of the book, but that is complicated by the fact that the
book was republished in almost 20 editions in the 17th century
alone, and without the title page it can be tricky to determine which edition I
am looking at. However, in comparing the text with other copies of other
editions in the special collections, and with images of other editions
available online, I began to parse out the small differences that set the
various books apart. During the hand press period, individual pieces of metal
type were arranged by hand to print each sheet of text. Even if the same type
was used and arranged the same way for different editions, small differences
can be seen.See the picture below with the 1626 edition on the left and the 1631 on the right.

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">The red arrow points to the switched orientation of the type used in the border. Note the different catchwords in the yellow boxes.

Using this
method, I was able to determine that the book was either a first edition (1626)
or a reissue of the first edition (1627). (“Reissue” meaning the book was put
on sale again without re-setting the type or making changes to the text – which
could constitute a new “edition.”) The only difference between the 1626 version
and the 1627 version is the addition of a fancy, engraved title page, in addition to the
original, plain, letterpress title page (which still reads 1626). The reason for these variations, or any clues to which year the copy in the Small Special
Collections was published, is still eluding me. Further
research and a possible trip up to the Folger to look at some other 1626/7
copies will hopefully shed some light on this soon. I’ll keep you posted!

All the condition and contextual information,
along with a step-by-step proposal based on what I see when I look closely at
each object, is recorded systematically in an assessment/treatment proposal
document. This document serves both as a guide for the conservator during
treatment and as a reference point for discussion with the curator, who will
determine if the proposed treatment aligns with the research goals for the
object.

Next, the object is photographed to
record its condition and unique features before treatment. Usually, this is
done on a copy stand for books and documents. However, many of the maps and
broadsides I will be treating were too big, so they were done on the
Digitization Production Group’s Cruse scanner. The images collected by the
flatbed scanner are so high-quality that each scan takes about 10 minutes to
complete!

After all this, the objects are
finally ready to treat, and I hope to dive in on that step starting next week.

Yes, I know it is strange that
the Lab played host to a well-known pest—one that is named for its predilection
for eating antiques. Perhaps, if you

in their career—how to handle insects that can potentially cause extensive damage
to the organic material of our cultural heritage?

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">IPM is a method used by museums and libraries across the country in order to aid in the
control and prevention of pest-related damage in paper-based collections. The reason that this is so important is that
insects are often attracted to adhesives and starches found in the components
of libraries and archives, and will occasionally attack the paper itself. This leads to the loss of structural
components, and in some cases, to extensive damage to precious information

illustrate the level of damage that can be caused by the occasional pest. In the case of these volumes, before UVa
acquired them, they lived in a plantation manor where they were susceptible to
all manner of insect attack. In the
image on the right, we can see that insects devoured all of the paper off of
the spines (paper that was full of appealing adhesive, not doubt) but
left the title labels which were, for whatever reason, clearly not as
delicious.
<![endif]-->Hello! My name is Quinn Morgan Ferris, and I am
UVa’s new book conservation intern!
Recently relocated from New York City (via Alaska), I’m a fourth year
student at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center,
finishing my M.A. in Library and Archives Conservation here in
Charlottesville. I will make periodic
“guest appearances” when Eliza sends interesting projects my way at the bench…

particular relevance to the hidden decorative arts history of UVa arrived in
the lab in a stack of file folders—cut samples of historic wallpaper taken off
the walls from Pavilion I and Morea House.
These samples, fragments of wall paper that had been hidden under layers
of paint, were saved during a renovation of the buildings in 1988. Since that time, they had been all but
forgotten until Architectural Conservator, Mark Kutney, brought them into the
lab so that something could be done to ensure their preservation and
accessibility. These samples varied in
size, color and condition, and clearly had been all but lost to history.

the people of the past and the prevailing taste of the times. They may also reveal
a thing or two about the distinguished faculty members that, with Thomas
Jefferson’s guiding vision, gave shape to UVa in the first part of the 19th

has often been passed over, possibly because its very purpose is to be the
background of a room. Additionally, it
is often overlooked with respect to other decorative arts because of its
fragility and ephemerality. It is often
a casualty to fluctuating styles, resulting in a very small number of
wallpapers surviving intact in situ.

this does not diminish the amount of information that we can garner from the
way a room is papered, or how important it is as a decorative feature. Choices of furniture and drapery would often
be made based on the tone set by the papered walls. Wallpaper can suggest the age, status, or
gender of the inhabitants and even the very function of the room it’s in. Layers of wallpaper on top of one another can
tell you something of the changing ownership of a building, or simply the
fickle preference of the lady of the house.

Conversely,
in the case of our samples, what we know about the history of UVa’s buildings
helps to illuminate a bit about the recovered wallpaper. For example, Pavilion I, which adjoins the Rotunda
on the Lawn’s west side, was built in 1822.
While it is unclear exactly when the samples from Pavilion I are from,
Kutney explained that it would not be unusual for a professor to decorate and
furnish his interiors himself. If that’s
true, then it’s possible that the bottommost layers of wallpaper may have been
chosen by Pavilion I’s first occupant, John Patton Emmet. As the professor of natural history Emmet
taught courses in chemistry, comparative anatomy and botany. Emmet resided in Pavilion I from 1825 to 1833,
during which time botany was of particular interest to him—as well as to Thomas
Jefferson, who’s letter to Emmet regarding the introduction of botany as a
course of study at UVa can be read here. Emmet’s botanical experiments soon became so
prolific that he outgrew the Pavilion’s garden space. In 1833, he relocated to a nearby University
property, which he deemed the “Morea” House—from the Latin morus, meaning mulberry—so named for the trees Emmet grew on the
lawn for the cultivation of silkworms.

Perhaps
having the botany professor as the occupant of the two spaces where the
wallpaper was recovered is significant to these samples? Perhaps it explains
something about the simple palletes of gray and green, or the overwhelming
number of floral motifs used throughout?
Yes, it is possible. However, to
venture that far into conjecture may be a little erroneous. What we can safely infer is that these
wallpapers provided the backdrop to Emmet’s daily life, academic pursuits and
professorial interactions for the time that he occupied his position at UVa.

step in handling the wallpaper fragments was to create a documentation

curators, who will create an accession group, catalog records, finding aids and
appropriate housing so that anyone who may be interested in accessing this
burgeoning collection need go no further than the library.

I am often surprised by things found in libraries, although given the length of my time in the field maybe I shouldn't be. You can turn a page and find chewing gum or open a manuscript box and find a whole roll of lemon Lifesavers among the items in a WWII field kit, or open a folder and realize that people have been debating the issue of vaccines for centuries.

My latest surprise was spotted by two researchers in the reading room. They were consulting the papers of a former music professor and the library page found an extra box in the stacks and brought it to the reading room, just in case the contents were of interest.

They opened the box and found papers, reels of microfilm and notebooks, but what was more remarkable was what they found lining the box. Too me the it looked like very thick, gray, blotter paper, but the researchers who are of "a certain age" recognized the lining material as asbestos fabric. Apparently, back in the good old days, you could buy asbestos fabric at the fabric store. Asbestos is remarkably chemical and heat resistant and so it was frequently used to fire-proof buildings, but there were multiple home uses as well. My guess in this case, is that the previous owner of the box was using the asbestos fabric as a way to fire proof the box although it is hard to say for sure.

We now know that asbestos fiber is hazardous to human health and so it has been rapidly disappearing from daily life, only to pop up as part of building renovation projects or a DIY situation like this storage box.

The good news for us at the Library is that the University has a very responsive Heath and Safety Office who sent a staff person over right away. Since the fabric hadn't been disturbed enough to release fibers, clean-up was very straightforward. We all got to have our "neato-keen" moment, take pictures for training purposes and then wave good bye as the asbestos fabric and storage box was carefully taken away. atthebenchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726150916256975594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-381088581569647994.post-90924838735229886942014-02-06T12:54:00.001-08:002014-02-06T12:54:31.889-08:00.Ciao!

.
Originally uploaded by at the bench

atthebenchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726150916256975594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-381088581569647994.post-85718426358742941382014-02-06T12:37:00.001-08:002014-02-06T12:37:49.594-08:00Braille Atlas

.
Originally uploaded by at the bench
Can you name the continent?
atthebenchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726150916256975594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-381088581569647994.post-56075336860462900182013-12-19T09:51:00.001-08:002013-12-19T13:20:57.200-08:00Custom button display

Our library books are arranged in Library of Congress call number order for the most part, but we do have some books grouped as collections according to the requests of the original donor.

On this particular occasion I was looking through the shelves of the typography collection which had been assembled by Edward L. Stone of Roanoke and purchased by the University upon his death. It is a wonderful collection with books that span the history of printing and as a happy accident for me a nice array of period bindings. As I was looking at the books on the shelf, I noticed a Bible <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" data-reactid=".r[3wnzs].[1][4][1]{comment10151986233546202_12234276}.[0].{right}.[0].{left}.[0].[0].[0][3]">Typ .B37 1717C no.2 with a label on the spine that said "Popham Family". As a fairly common practice, families used to have Bibles that were passed down through the generations, the blank pages at the front and back filled with lists of births, deaths and marriages. I had a classmate from college whose last name was Popham so the spine label caught my eye.
There were two genealogy pages with the usual lists of names and dates, and so I snapped a few pictures and alerted my former classmate to this little coincidence. Thanks to the joys of social media, not only did he chime in, but so did his sister and another friend who is well versed in genealogy. Everyone was very excited and after perusing my photographs, they did conclude that this Bible was indeed owned by their ancestors back in England.
There are no records of this particular Bible prior to its acquisition by the UVa Library, but it is not uncommon for family Bibles to wind up in the hands of book dealers, book collectors and libraries, particularly if the line of the family with the Bible dies out and the other lines have family Bibles of their own.
This particular Bible had been printed by John Baskett in London in 1717 and it is most likely for this reason that the book was purchased by Mr. Stone. Many editions of the Bible are famous for their typos and Mr. Baskett is famous for printing an edition in which the heading for <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" data-reactid=".r[3wnzs].[1][4][1]{comment10151986233546202_12234418}.[0].{right}.[0].{left}.[0].[0].[0][3]">chapter 20 of Luke is printed as "parable of the vinegar" when it should be the "parable of the vineyard". Conservators spend a lot of time talking about how environmental conditions can affect the overall stability of an artifact. Our training includes reading many, many articles and case studies that document how fluctuations in temperature and relative humidity (RH) can cause dimensional change in an artifact and increase the rate of chemical decay. High RH can cause a book to expand and is an even bigger factor when it comes to the chemical reactions that cause paper to degrade.

Low relative humidity is also a concern. If high RH can cause a book to expand, low RH can case a book to shrink and warp. Since a book is made of several different component parts that will respond to RH fluctuations at different rates, keeping books and artifacts at a stable RH is crucial.

These facts can be a little abstract and when sharing them with colleagues as I advocate for the care of the Library's collections, it can be difficult to convince people that a book that has survived hundreds of years without environmental control is still susceptible to low RH. So I was particularly horrified and delighted on a recent cross-country plane flight when I noticed that the book I had brought with me, Maurice Craig's "Dublin 1660-1860" had started to respond to the low RH (10-12% at best) almost two hours into my flight. Note how the covers have warped away from the body of the text block (pages). The book had been completely flat when I packed it that morning. I had been reading it during the flight and only noticed the warping when the flight attendant gave me a cup and I put the book down on the tray table. I took the picture to make sure I wasn't mis-remembering the condition of the book and resolved to compare it with the condition of the book once I had returned home and the book had a chance to re-adjust to my air-conditioned home in Charlottesville.

My flight had been on Wednesday, August 7th, leaving SFO at 1pm Pacific Time. The picture at right was taken Friday, August 9th about 8am Eastern Time. Note how the covers are no longer warping away from the textblock. Remarkable!

The low relative humidity on the plane is extreme, but it isn't uncommon. The winter time RH for the Northeastern United States is often in the mid to low teens and collections that are housed in areas that don't have supplemental humidity control are at risk. Most libraries address the need by keeping their fragile books in boxes. I was going to return this book, but maybe I will renew it through the winter to see whether we need to make a box.
My parents would give our route (I-95 from DC to Maine, for example) to the person at the AAA office who would then assemble the TripTik page by page and put on a comb binding. The maps were narrow and only showed the highway and a few features to each side but I thought they had a fun, connect-the-dots aspect to them as the road wound in various directions when you flipped the pages.
Yes, it's bubble gum! Although, it is so dry and brittle that it has broken into little pieces, which in a way is a good thing too otherwise I might be a little worried about the gum attracting pests. But I saw no signs of insect interest when looking through the magazine. So all is well for the book to go on exhibit.atthebenchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726150916256975594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-381088581569647994.post-46208274883416138322013-05-09T09:32:00.000-07:002013-05-09T09:32:47.000-07:00An Expose from South CarolinaI think "exploded" had a different meaning back then...

My colleague has good hand skills although hands-on is not her primary role (she talks about this in her blog post), and I felt comfortable showing her the method and then leaving her to the task. This can be a tough choice for a conservator who, in most cases, has the primary responsibility for the physical well-being of the collection. Should I examine and document every item that goes on exhibit? should I make every custom cradle and install every item to ensure that nothing happens to our books? Perhaps, in an ideal world yes, but those who work in libraries know that life is far from ideal. There are many projects and exhibits that happen on short notice and the more people who can "pitch in" the better. Being the lone book conservator at a large special collections library means I have to make strict choices about how I spend my time so that the really needy books get the treatment they need. Having trained my colleague means I can step back from the exhibits role just a little, and knowing that I do spend a lot of time with our library collections and will see or hear about any difficulties gives me confidence in this choice. atthebenchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726150916256975594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-381088581569647994.post-77868305649328554572013-02-21T09:01:00.000-08:002013-02-21T09:01:47.059-08:00Increase Mather has remarkably neat handwritingfrom his manuscript "Concerning Apparitions"
I won't bother with a flickr link for this one since his writing is truly illegible. When you work in libraries and archives, this is more of what you're used to. Researchers often become familiar with a given person's hand, but the cramped script of the good old days is often beyond me, which is why I was so struck my Increase Mather's neat printed hand. Remember, they were most likely writing with a goose quill pen!

It is part of a series of books about all sorts of things you shouldn't let the Pigeon do, and after last Thursday, I want to add a new title to the series: "Don't Let the Pigeon Play with Tape".

The Special Collections Library recently acquired the archive of a bank from a small town in southern Virginia. The staff at the bank had carefully saved many documents from the bank's founding and from important events throughout the bank's history. This is just the sort of news that makes archivists very happy. What the staff also did was frame a number of the documents and put them on display.

This is just the sort of news that makes archivists and conservators anxious, because where there are window mats and framed documents, there is often tape. (Insert dramatic, horror-movie scream here.)

In a better world, the framer would have used some sort of photo corner to hold the document in place instead of taping it to the top of the window in the window mat. Perhaps the roll of tape said "archival" on the package. Who knows the tape may even be pH neutral, but that does not mean that directly applying tape to an artifact is ever a good idea. With pressure sensitive tapes (the kind you pull off a roll and smush into place with your fingers) the adhesive doesn't really cure but rather becomes tangled in the fibers of the paper and that is what is holding everything together. So removing the tape means you are trying to untangle the adhesive from the glue without tearing the surface of the paper.

This was the scariest piece since not only did I have to get the tap off the top of the document, but there were two additional sections of tape toward the bottom of the document. It was nerve wracking work, but we were very, very, lucky. After two hours and some very fine work with my casselli spatula I was able to liberate all of the documents from their window mats.

So even though we had a happy ending, I would still say Don't Let the Pigeon Play with Tape!!
Usually, the boards are sturdy and it is the cloth of the spine that has fallen apart due to the stress of use and light damage. The standard practice is to build a new spine out of airplane linen and adhere the remnants of the original spine over top.

In the picture below you can see the mostly re-bound book with the remnant spine to the left. The book was originally a case binding with thin cloth over the spine and boards. I chose a slightly different method of board attachment for the conservation binding so that the new binding would be more durable, and also so that I could address the needs of dealing with the original boards and spine separately.

The replacement spine is airplane linen that is painted with several layers of acrylic paint to match the original 19th century cloth. The trick with matching this sort of cloth is that it is never faded to one color, since the spine of a book (as it sits on a shelf) is usually more subject to light damage than the boards. If you look at my sample book on the left you see that the original color of the cloth was purple, but that the spine faded to ocher. The J.L. Mott book that I am treating has a similar color variation although the original spine is a now a darker brown. So the linen that will show through in the joint area needs to be a faded purple-ish ocher, while the spine needs to be a darker brown. Not only do I need to get the colors right, but I need to get the placement of the colors right as well.

In this picture I've got my test colors up on the left, and the replacement spine cloth is on the binding to check the colors and placement. I can fine tune the colors once the spine cloth is on the book, but it is much safer to do the majority of the paining when the linen is away from the original binding. So I paint the replacement cloth, let it dry and hold it next to the original binding to check my progress. When close to done, I place the painted cloth on the spine to see what is needed in the way of final touch ups. As you can see, there is a portion of the original spine missing so I have to make sure that the color works across the width of the spine.

This is the finished spine. It turned out really well and only needed a little bit of re-touching when the original spine was adhered over the replacement linen spine. atthebenchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14726150916256975594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-381088581569647994.post-9782788528269139172012-12-19T09:44:00.000-08:002012-12-19T09:56:44.598-08:00Map of Boston 1775A recent acquisition from a particularly exciting time on Boston's history!
As mechanization spread throughout industry eventually all of the tasks were taken over by machine. The Smyth book-sewing machine was patented in 1868, by David Smyth and was purchased by the publishing company Appleton that had an in-house bindery.
You can really see the difference between hand work and machine work in these two spines. I was cleaning the old adhesive off the spines when my colleague Melanie looked over my shoulder and pointed it out. The machine sewing is straight, paired lines of chain stitching while the hand made book on the right has crooked kerfs and is even missing one at the tail.
